In-Review: Samsung Galaxy S II

As some of you know I have taken the leap in joining the Android world. I bought the Samsung Galaxy S II and I left my iPhone 3GS. I felt like I needed to play around for a few months or so with another phone (Android) before fully committing to being a "iPhoner".

So far the phone is fantastic! Im not gonna bore you with the details of the processor or the storage capacity. If you're interested to know go here.

Anyway, back to the phone. Its actually surprisingly good compared to my brothers experience with the Nexius-Andriod phone.

Here is some of the points I like about the Phone:

**There is going to be a lot of iPhone-Samsung comparing so bare with me if don't have one or the other**

I was lucky enough to observe an Amazon App Store, which puts up a free app to download (that usually costs a lot) to be a free download for a day. Hard to scrutinize the Amazon app for Android when it places legit free apps for every Amazon consumer (and in this day and age its probably 80% of the world's population).

The android Ginger Bread UI is extraordinary. Its very friendly and rarely has glitches or sudden freezes. It resembles the iPhone or iPod Touch's UI, if you are familiar with them.

The media part of the phone is definitely a competitor to the iPhone, but unfortunately the Samsung Galaxy S II does not have great software to cater to the phone like iTunes caters to the iPhone. Making the iPhone the superior media player. Although, an up side to that would be that you have the Amazon music store on the Galaxy S II and you are able to download any music from the world wide web, which trumps the iPhone which is only exclusive with the Apple iTunes music store and no other music resource. For some people its enough but for other's it may restrict them making the Galaxy S II a superior choice to the iPhone. Since the iPad, I have been browsing creating media involving art (Photography, Sketching, Graphic Design, Writing) on it. I haven't been using the iPhone for such things unless I am away from my iPad. So, if you plan to edit or create (and you dont have an iPod Touch/iPad) stick to the iPhone. But if you only write, view images, and capture (for fun only) images then go ahead and experiment with the Samsung Galaxy S II.

The gaming aspect is similar to any other mobile device these days, or more specifically the iPhone. 3D gaming is actually superior because of the larger screen. Also, there is a Gaming app that lets you try the app first before buying, unlike the iPhone were you have to be bothered by trying the "lite" version then downloading the real one.

All in all its an amazing phone and it's definitely a competitor for the iPhone and other advanced mobile phone's. Most of the apps that I like are available in both the Android and Amazon app stores.

P.S. The Samsung Galaxy S II is limited with languages, excluding many valuable languages.

I've told you over and over again that I like to sketch but I rarely post my sketches but you can view them here. Sketching is something I love to do as well as other forms of media. My sister taught me when I was young and I was hooked ever since but it definitely was a on again and off again relationship. Regardless I love sketching, and I've experimented with a lot of other things like painting, but nothing comes close to sketching. I am strictly pencil, with a few colors every now and again but I also sketch on my iPad but I will leave that for another post.

For the sake of avoiding any more ramblings let cut to the chase, this is a time-lapse of me sketching, well finalizing, a sketch of a guy that I do not know but it does look like someone I know. It didn't occur to me to capture all of the process from the beginning, it only occurred to me during the end. Anyway, this is the first time I release I time-lapse on Masked Photography please leave me any feedback.

This is a video I did a few months ago when it was a rainy season in Kuwait. The first rainy season in a few years, and now when the temperatures are reaching 49.9 degrees we regret not running in the rain. Staying out in the cool breeze. Well, what can I say during the sweltering heat we miss the cold breeze, and when its freezing cold we miss the warmth of the heat. ;/

Patience is what the world nurtures in every soul, but the patient are like ants, small and easily crushed.

What's this work about?

DM: Don't fear the words that utter from your mouth

for they are the truth and they are a symbol of self expression.

I've always feared expressing anything I do because I dont like to expose myself. Mostly because I fear rejection. I get discouraged easily. I try to pretend like this [photography, digital art, design. editing photos/videos, sketching] isnt the love of my life because sometimes the things you love fly away when you expose them. Although, I am trying to break free from that, especially in this blog, one work at a time.

This was an experiment in photoshop. Everything was done from scratch from the stripes to the glow, except for the dancer I got that one for the internet. This was a fun trial and error, and I think I like the way it turned out. Its not perfect but its definitely something I like and something I like to do in Photoshop :D.

Overview: iOS 5

iOS in and of itself is probably the best operating system known to humanity. I know a little too extreme. No but seriously I never liked the Blackberry operating system I felt that it was too limited. Also, it was focused on people who like to chat "chatters", or 'Habladoras' as my Spanish friends would say.

Back to my point, iOS 5 and past iOS versions all present a common thread that not only do they provoke media consumption but also media creation. I for one would have never got into digital art if it wasn't for the iPad app ArtStudio. It was so easy to use and so professional that I couldn't help myself. I would just start creating work on it. Experimenting with different things (nothing worth showing yet but Ill show you soon).

Another great app addition was Noir, a photography-based app that turns your photographs into black and white but with a kick. I could do black and white in Photoshop or other image editing programs, by myself, but it was too easy done on the iPhone/iPad to be passed up.

Anyway, now enough with app review rambles. Lets go on to whats new in iOS 5:

PC Free Setup: About damn time they make setting up the iPhone PC free! Do you know how hard it is to contain your excitement for getting a new iphone but not being able to use it until you get home. TERRIBLE! Very cool of Apple to finally "cut the rope".
Automatic Sync: Another awesome one! Will be useful, for sure!
Wireless Backup to iCloud: Good, because you never know when your going to lose your iPhone unless you back it up everyday this feature will come in handy to those that don't.
New Notification bar: So when getting an email I can see what it says before I open it. Nice! Thats a great design move on Apple's part.

Reminder List: Nothing new. We all have reminders, this isn't going to remember any better. BUT Apple is making it convenient, so Ill high-5 them for that.
Over-the-air update: Again. CONVENIENT.
iMessage: Free messages YAAAY! :D
Air Play mirroring: A solution for those who have their photography collection or other media types on their iPad or iPhone, and therefore they can project it on the TV. A+
Photo editing: There are already a lot of apps out there that are way more advanced then what Apple putting out there, which is just cropping, red eye-reduction, and cropping pretty basic to me.

As you can see, Apple has added a wide variety of updates to the iPhone/iPad and we'll get our hand on them when they come this "fall" ofcourse Apple has to be mysterious like that ;/.

P.S. : I love the design of the WWDC 2011 ad. So simple, yet so colorful.

Reflect: Paulo Coelho's AWESOME Book Designs

I've been reading Paulo Coelho's Like the Flowing River. A book filled with his thoughts and reflections.

I have to admit people's willingness to pay money for a man's ideas and point-of-views is quite fascinating. I admire Paulo Coelho's writing till this day, he presents an outlook on life that not many people have. But this is all besides the point.

Back to the point.

As I was "reading" it, or more like skimming through it reading one word out of hundreds. There was only one thing that caught my attention, and it was the advertisement at the end of the book, displaying all his past works. It displayed all the covers of his previous published books. I couldn't help but notice the cleverly chosen designs. So elegant and delicate chosen colors. Like aqua, light purple, and light green. They're so light on the eyes that they make you want to grab it and buy it. I know they say never judge a book by its cover but I could help it! I notice these things. They're presented so delicately and it was so focused on one chosen color that makes the cover distinct.

I have to say with today's colors being so many and so accessible people are always bombarded with all of them at once, in one design. Some people fear white space (myself included) when making designs, but empty space or one chosen color (instead of choosing five) can beautify your work even more. Like his book covers show so little (in colors) yet say so much.

InReview: Nikon D3100

The DM EXPERIENCE:

The title is a little cheesy but well it is my experience with the DSLR.

The above photo was taken by me, in Kuwait, with the Nikon D3100 during one of my wonderful vacations.

I got my Nikon around January 2011 (I know its about time I review it ;p). The price is usually around $748.98, its not bad compared to its astonishing abilities. My previous camera, Nikon D40, was good but it was always lacking in giving an image crispness, clarity, and vivid details.

In comparison to the D40, The Nikon D3100 brings a magical presence to your hand. Photographing has never been more delightful. It has pumped my photography with energy that the Nikon D40 never gave. Its official, its the best camera I've ever laid my hands on!

The D3100 has been an investment that has not gone to waste at all.

Hello Summer!

Summer is finally here. Schools finally over! You know what that means right? Blogging my ass off! I have taken more than 9 months of from blogging. I wasnt consistent anyway but I never took this much time of. But, Ill be happy to tell you that Im back and Im excited I have a lot of projects lined up for the summer and Ill drop them here one by one. Just wanted to update you on the whole camera situation. I told you that I have ordered the Nikon D3100, now its only a matter of hours until I get my hands on it. According to the tracking website the package should be delivered today! Im so excited to finally get my hands on it! I cant wait till I get back to my photography!

In other news I'm 8 posts away from my 200th post! I can believe it, its really exciting. I have no idea what I will post for that 200th post...any suggestions?

Resolutions

I hate posting without photos. It feels so empty. Anyway, it's a few days until I get it ( dam free shipping :/).

New year is tonight I can't wait for me to right 2011 on all my sketches :). For some reason it seems exciting. Any last minute sketches for 2010 should be done today.

So this time a year we do New Year resolutions/goals. So here a few of mine:
- get my hands on the nikon d3100 (almost there)
- take a photo of three beaches! Not ponds.
- taken pictures in a new country.
- sketch 50 sketches and post them.
- take 50 great photos
- post 100 or more posts.
- some school goals

So these are some of my goals/resolutions. Hope they happen! :) I'll try to stick to them.

Broken

So, I broke my camera. I had Nikon D40 and a few weeks ago it dropped on the floor and now I get and error when I open the camera "Press shutter release button again - Error" and the lens wont attach any more. Im no technician but its obviously something that detects the lens as well as keeps a hold of it is broken. I did take it to a guy and it was too expensive to fix a 2 year old camera. It was 200 bucks!

So long story short I came across a better camera the Nikon D3100. It was given a 4.5 star on Amazon! I don't know about you but if people review something and give it close to a 5 star then that must be the truth.

Honestly they had me at Full HD Video recording. I love photography but there is also something about video that I like. I guess Im just a media freak ;p. Another thing is it has a 14.2 megapixel compared to my Nikon D40 which was a 6.1megapixel camera. This is why I think getting the D3100 would be a wise choice.

I've ordered it off of Amazon but ofcourse its goanna be a while before it arrives. Until then you'll be seeing a lot more sketching ;). My iPad has been an excellent canvas for me to draw, sketch, and paint on, but thats for another post ;p.

I think that thats funny the reality of our situations versus our ideal situations they're two different things. Its like comparing black and white; north and south; young and old. This is my way of exploiting this type of comparison.

A Splash of Milk

Today is a different type of post. Its obvious that I need different to post. I have been exploring photoshop a lot lately, and I found it to be rather fun not only to improve my digital photography, but also in creating digital graphic art.

As I get closer and closer to graduating. I come across a lot of questions as to what to major in. I truly love all aspects of digital media but I always question my ability to be working in that same field. Is is a field that I can be successful in or is it just another dream that will not be fulfilled. Not to bore you with my own problems but I just cant help but have these questions in my mind a lot.

I think that for me I love thinking outside of the box. Making things that are impossible possible. Although the time I spend trying to think outside of the box is a not a lot because of school. Anyhow, I think that I would really enjoy creating logos, ad posters, and media ads for businesses. This way its a lot easier to get a job, because you either are successful as a graphic artist working the publishing industry or you succeed working in the business industry. Anyway, I should stop rambling about my academic issues.

On that note. I made totally random ad for milk, but not for any specific milk brand.

I chose to design a milk carton because milk is a popular product for people these days because of its numerous benefits. I thought to myself about all the people around the world who drink milk every morning whether it be in their cereals or in their milk. Even vegetarians drink soy milk and almond milk. The importance of milk is very huge, at least thats what I've experienced.

The idea came from that. The fact that milk is important and precious like gold. I was inspired to create a milk carton design, through Photoshop, that had a splash of milk on the packaging and a golden background. I think it looks a lot more luxurious than all other milk brands.

Hey Guys!

Im back, obviously its been a long time, yet again. Last time I posted was before school started. Now school started and Im crazy busy doing homework, and test preparations.

Anyway now lets go onto the good stuff. These past few days I have been working on a personal project for my eyes and yours. This project is a presentation of some of the best cities I've been to, as well as them being one of my favorites.

I havent gone to many cities, but I do know that I am definitely in love with this one: Boston! I was born in Boston but I wasnt raised there. Although, I visit this city every year for the summer holidays. It's quieter than New York and as classy as London. One of the best streets over there is Boylston St. & Newbury St. Unfortunately, I was only able to capture pictures of Boylson St. during this summer.

This was done on photoshop by overlaying picture over picture, but ofcourse it isnt as simple as that there are a lot of aspects to it. I only withhold those aspects. I took a picture of everything in the photo. The globe came from an area that had one similar to the Universal Studios one, but ofcourse it was way smaller. Anyway, the people dancing, the street sign, the street building, and the american flag were all taken by me. The only thing that wasnt taken by me is the texture. I used this cubed shaped glass filled with water as the place that I go to to clean my brush. Half way through painting I realized that it was a beautiful color so I decided to take a picture of it.

Today is a fantastic day because today is my birthday. I am one who loves celebrations and I think that presents should be given in the lamest of occasions that a person encounters. I apologize to you for one celebration that I was too self-involved to mention: your birthday was on the 12th of June, and I missed it. I am ashamed and embarrassed because you have given me a way to share my photographs and other types of digital media in a way that no other device and/or person has. It is not fair to you that you have to be used and abused without you being given credit. So, this is my way of apologizing for saying that 'I was going to do something special for you birthday', but not doing so! So, I will create an ebook marking all this blog's greatest photographs, through my eyes, to celebrate a year of greatness. Also I will make a promise to feed you 2 blog posts a day instead of one every other day. So everyday at 10 am and 10 pm E.T. I will post something new. This will go on for an entire 2 weeks! Its really been a great blogging experience! I feel like Ive learned a lot in the past months of blogging. I am really loving the blogging thing. When I first began this blog I though of it as a blog JUST for photographs, then as time passed I started to change my taste of certain things and I got out of my comfort zone with things like sketching, painting, writing, and all types of digital media. I don't know if you guys know this or not but the italic writing below the photo is my emotional and physical interpertation of the photo and its relevance. Sometimes the writing is for that but at other times its just writing that I thought of and wrote in my notebook. Its really fun posting here and showing the things that I like and my work. This blog is going to have its first birthday soon which is 9 days from now on the 12th. Stick around special post for that! I'm baaack! After a long absence I have come back with some new photos. Nothing too exciting because I haven't traveled in a while but I do have some photos that I have taken at home. The reason that I havent been posting these months is because I have been extremely busy with school so when I had to post I would be to clueless towards writing any word let alone post a photo or sketch. So, now I am done with school and Im ready to start exploring what I can post on this blog. Be ready Im going to be posting a lot more than usual of digital media. I hope that you like it. Got The iPad!!

Well this past week has been post-free for a major reason: I have bought the Apple iPad! I have to tell you that it is truly a special device that you can be really productive in. All the Apple based apps are really the same as the iPhone apps but just improved. The other apps available at the app store are extraordinary. I have already downloaded Some; ArtStudio, Eyewitness, Photogene, Digital Photographer magazine, Filterstorm, Offline Pages, etc. These apps had made the Apple iPad device really, really great!

ArtStudio, an app also available on the iPhone, is an impressively inspiring piece of software for digital art. In fact its perfect for sketching on the go. Now, I did some sketches but I have decided not to post any of them because they are either incomplete, or not 'aesthetically pleasing'. Since I have only been sketching on it for a week with a bruised finger the sketches didnt turn out that preasantable, but I have already ordered the Pogo stylus from Amazon.com. It should be here very, very soon. Other than that the screen is very responsive, thats to the large 9-inch screen, and it is an even better canvas than the iPhone. I suggest that if you like sketching this will save you a lot of papers because of its portability, and wide range of capabilities. Now you can sketch anywhere.

The other four applications are all photography apps. They help adjust the photo's saturation, exposure, contrast, etc. I can see myself using this tool often when I am on the go. They sell now a camera kit, which helps place a dock on the bottom of the iPad so that you can sync from your camera via memory card, or USB. Now you can edit anywhere, and everywhere with you 1.5 pound iPad. Photogrene is the best one of them all editing on it is smooth and elegent. There is no app better than Photogene for adjusting and adding effects to a photo.

Offline pages is a really excellent productivity app. It helps you save pages that you have visited on the web before going into, say, a plane, or a place that does not serve Wi-Fi. This way you can save pages that you want read, and then read it on the go. Now, this is only because I bought the Wi-Fi version. There is a Wi-Fi + 3G iPad coming April 30, that serves connectivity everywhere (with a monthly fee).

So, there you have it my first app downloads for the iPad. The iPad is as easy to use as all the other Apple products, its elegant, and can be taken everywhere. No, you dont need an iPad in your life but it is definitely a great addition to it.

It has been a long time since my last post, and it seems like every post I start with 'its been a while'. I really cant understand why I cant give myself a few minutes of focusing on my responsibilities and do something thats for me, like blogging. I like blogging I like sharing my ideas, and work. I feel like its an escape. I really cant explain the feeling I get. Anyway its been a hectec year. Hey, lets just look on the bright side of things and lets be grateful for the fact that in June Ill be traveling and Ill be able to give myself a lot of time to blog, take photographs, write, buy an iPad, read, sketch, etc., basically everything I cant find the time to do write now. So, I really cant wait till that day that I want the most comes where I can enjoy my days and nights with all that I cant do now.

Its been a while I havent found a lot of inspiration lately. I kind of wish I could just hop onto a plane and go anywhere where nature is beautiful. A place thats seeking appreciation. I've been feeling incredibaly haunted these past couple of days. Seriously like I was seriously feeling the anxiety rush through my veins and into my skull. Im loving photoshop!!! There is so many things you can do. Crop this, magic wand this, magic want that. There is very little that you can't do. Now this is another photo that I had edited the apple logo (cortosy of Apple, inc.) is on a picture I had taken with my iPhone 3GS (not the clearest photo in the world). I love how much better this one looks apart from the one I did in the summer (available in the archives). There is no particular reason why I chose to place the apple logo apart from the fact that all my gadgets are created by Apple.

Wow its been a hell of a long time since my last post!! Life has been taking over most of my time. Photography is becoming something I can only imagine enjoying in my late night dreams. Hopefully when school consumes less of my time Ill be able to post as many pictures as I possibly can :D.

As for taking any good pictures it has been a slow process. The winter weather isnt helping either. I have been pretty much lacking creativity in creating photos that dont have to envolve nature. Im doing the best I can to do that. I will hopefully come up with something soon.

This is a picture that was taken from my plane ride. I loved the lovely calming view so I decided to take a picture of it! Turned out better than I expected :D...hopefully I'll find more great scenes like this one to capture.

Today was a very quite day. I had a lot to do but not a lot done. I am trying to balance my hobbies and interests with work and success but they just don't seem to be balancing together. I am feeling a lot of imbalance in my life right now but I'll try to stabilize everything with time.

This photo is of two ducks in a pond at a park. The ducks were so quite and were so relaxed that I actually thought about how fun it would be to be them for a day. To roam around calm waters, day and night without a care in the world. That sounds like what life should be like.

The don't know if serenity is the right word to describe this but this scene calms my nerves. So, I guess that counts as a good reason for calling it serenity (I should stop rambling). This week hasn't been AS hectic as other weeks, which means I have been having some free time to take photos and post them (YAY!!:D).

Photography is becoming more and more interesting everyday and I think I'm going to go deeper into photography by trying to do environmental photography. Environmental photography is when you take pictures to address a certain environmental issue in the world (or locally). This has been something that I have been very much interested in for a long time but I never gave it much thought but now I think I'll take more time to develop ideas and topics to refer them in my photography.

Another week, another new discovery. I found a song by Alicia Keys and Alejandro Sanz. I think that this song should be the song of the month. It is called 'Looking For Paradise' and it is the most meaningful song I've heard in a while. It is sung in two languages, that I adore, which are Spanish and English. It is also sung by the well-known talented spanish singer/song writer Alejandro Sanz and the very talented American singer Alicia Keys. It is also the best song to listen to in the morning when your off to work or school.

Well, its been a while since I opened this blog and started to post photos on it and I feel completely happy with it. Although the traffic numbers have been quite low I still feel that blogging is the best way to get everything out of your system and into the word. It is the best way to transform your views and opinions into more than just thoughts, you turn them into words and pictures that can be shared with the world.

To be honest I didn’t think that I would love blogging as much as I do know. Even though life doesn’t give you a lot of opportunities to post as freely but its been a few months and I’ve already posted 103 posts! That’s exciting, I never thought that I would be able to get to 100 after a few short months but I did it! And Hopefully there will be more blog posts to come.

In this post I decided to do something different. I have taken and posted photographs of rocks before but I have not posted a photograph of a rock in a long time. I have been focused more on photos of flowers and plants. Basically just nature but now I will try to not post too many nature photos.

So, this is my 103^rd post. I hope you enjoy it :D.

We may love how we live our daily lives but at the same time we might hate it. Nobody nows what perfection is nor do they know what it is like to be perfect. We all try to be noble people with the best moral compasses at hand, but we always tend to question if the reality of life is being taken into consideration. A question which can be argued in many ways. Philosophy and religions only can guide us so far, but thoughts and opinions tend to rush through our veins like blood. Going straight to our heads, and always having it question our ways of living. It is ruining every chance we had of living life in its reality.

The reality, to me, is that if you tend to rely on your thoughts and opinions to define issues more than the actual reality of the issues you may be a very closed minded individual. Looking around and observing the different kinds of issues and problems can make you feel miserable. Try to look at the more beautiful and natural things like nature. You may all be used to looking at it by now and you may not appreciate its existence but it is the most calming thing in the world.
